Bringing Down the Hammer on SAT Grammar

Not a grammar guru? You don’t need to be one to do well on the SAT!

Grammar may seem random and untamable, but it’s actually a lot like math—a closed system with specific rules (if you’ve ever taken Latin, you have a good sense of the structured ways in which various parts of speech function and relate to each other).

Great, so then grammar is just about memorizing tons of annoying rules? Nope! You read, hear, and speak English every single day, so you already have a pretty good internal sense of these rules, even if you’ve never shaken hands with a gerund or gone foraging for misplaced modifiers. The tricky

DPS loses two state appeals on school programs

Denver Public Schools lost two appeals before the state board of education Wednesday and must prepare to open a new elementary by August.

Monarch Montessori, currently a private preschool in northeast Denver, applied last fall to create a public elementary charter school. In November, the DPS board voted 5-2 to deny the application.

The DPS board cited what it called weaknesses around the instruction of English-language learners, the financial feasibility of a school that was counting on three grants not yet secured and the structure of a board that would have the same members overseeing the private tuition-based preschool and the public elementary.

State board president Bob Schaffer criticized the district for denying an application based on requirements that he said went above the requirements of state statute.

“Schools just need a description of the governance board,” Schaffer said.

Learn how to make a meal of leftovers

Free cookery classes are being held to teach people how to make use of leftovers.

As well as cooking up to three recipes, people can pick up recipe cards and take home a free goody bag.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is hoping the classes will teach people to love their leftovers and save up to £50 a month by reducing food waste.

It is estimated that if everyone stopped throwing away food waste, the carbon that would be saved would be equal to taking one in every four cars off the road.

Sessions will be held at Brockington College, Enderby, on February 20 and 24 from 6pm to 9pm.

There will also be sessions at Loughborough College, on February 28, from 6pm to 9pm and March 6 from 6pm to 9pm.

ICT ‘poor in secondary schools’

Ofsted said, in some secondaries, there were no opportunities to develop programming skills

The teaching of information and communications technology (ICT) is inadequate in a fifth of secondary schools in England, Ofsted says.

Inspectors said teachers lacked the expertise and confidence to teach more demanding topics properly.

The report said areas such as databases and programming were poorly taught, with some pupils making more progress outside lessons than in them.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb said ICT teaching was “far too patchy”.

Of the 74 secondary schools visited between 2008 and 2011, achievement was good or outstanding in just 27 of the schools, satisfactory in 33 and inadequate in 14.

In 30 of the schools, nearly half of students reached the age of 16 without adequate foundation for further study or training in ICT and related subjects.
