Denver Public Schools lost two appeals before the state board of education Wednesday and must prepare to open a new elementary by August.
Monarch Montessori, currently a private preschool in northeast Denver, applied last fall to create a public elementary charter school. In November, the DPS board voted 5-2 to deny the application.
The DPS board cited what it called weaknesses around the instruction of English-language learners, the financial feasibility of a school that was counting on three grants not yet secured and the structure of a board that would have the same members overseeing the private tuition-based preschool and the public elementary.
State board president Bob Schaffer criticized the district for denying an application based on requirements that he said went above the requirements of state statute.
“Schools just need a description of the governance board,” Schaffer said.

You might not know it, but I maintain a Google calendar of higher ed events and conferences where I keep track of anything interesting for web and marketing teams working in universities and colleges.
