How do you like your site?

Web? Mobile? How about Responsive?

As my cutting-edge technically-oriented readers already know (but I love you the same even if you dont yet ;0), Responsive Web Design wasnt exactly born yesterday. The term was coined in an article written by Ethan Marcotte and published in May 2010 on A List Apart.

While Marcotte, the de-facto Founding Father of the Responsive Web Design approach (and its biggest evangelist), has already written a book about it, RWD still doesnt have an article of its own in Wikipedia where the only reference I found about it was this very short definition: a methodology for designing web sites that can adapt to a range of screen sizes and device types.

So, its no suprise that RWD examples in higher education dont abound yet even though this approach of designing once for all devices (desktops, large screens, tablets and mobile phones) might be the most efficient way to maintain and futureproof higher ed websites.

A few weeks ago I asked the + 2,500 readers of my weekly email newsletter if any were working or had launched a higher ed website based on a the Responsive Web Design approach.

Roundup of Internship Resources

With the semester ending and the summer coming, many students are looking for an internship position, hoping to gain some real-life experience and even land a job placement. Your student may be frustrated by the amount of the internship information from the campus career office, the internet and even his social groups. Naturally, as a parent you’ll have some questions of your own: Where should my student and I be searching? How can I help ease some of my student’s internship stress? How can I give constructive advice but give my student the space s/he needs? What’s a good timeline for my student’s internship preparation?

You have questions, we have answers!

We are working with Internships.com, the largest internship marketplace in the world. T

Colorado eighth-graders make gains in national assessment test as fourth-grade scores flat

Colorado’s eighth-graders showed significant improvement in math and reading, but fourth-grade test scores remained flat, according to the Nation’s Report Card, compiled by the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

Colorado was one of 13 states in which eighth-graders significantly improved in math since the test was last administered two years ago. The state’s average math score jumped five points from 2009 to an all-time high, while the percentage of students scoring “proficient” or higher rose from 40 percent to 43 percent.

“We’re always pleased when scores are significantly higher,” said Pam Sandoval, the state’s NAEP coordinator at the Colorado Department of Education.

11 sessions you should attend at #heweb11 from Oct 23-26 in Austin, TX

One of the biggest events of the year for higher ed web professionals, the High Ed Web Conference, is just 10 days away. And, Im so sad I wont be able to make it this year.

At least Ill be with the lucky heweb11 attendees in spirit. You should be able to spot the logo of my professional development business, Higher Ed Experts, in Austin as we are supporting, this year again, this great conference.

Since Higher Ed Experts is all about YOUR professional development, we chose to be the sponsor of the opening keynote at the conference, a keynote presented by Shawn Henry, Web Accessibility Initiative Outreach Coordinator at W3C. As I explained in my last University Business column, “Web Accessibility: Required, Not Optional,” Web Accessibility is going to be one of the big topics at the conference (and a central issue for higher ed institutions this year).
