Experts have been telling us that childhood obesity is epidemic in America, and some Seminole County school kids are doing something about it.
You are, as they say, what you eat. So kids at Goldsboro Elementary in Sanford are learning how to grow vegetables and the benefits of eating them.
The school is having a ribbon cutting on its new student garden Friday at 9 a.m., with the ceremony geared to ramp up enthusiasm for the project.
The Seminole school system gets its employee health insurance through United Healthcare, and the company has provided Melodie Griffin as wellness coordinator for Seminole schools to promote healthy lifestyles among employees and students.Insurance companies have discovered that keeping people healthy is healthy for their bottom line, as well as their customers.
The Seeds of Change program at Goldboro, featuring the garden, is part of that move. G

More than 60 parents attended a dyslexia drop-in session at a school.
Among those supporting the event at Folville Junior School, in Braunstone, was city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, a former special educational needs teacher.

He spoke about how important it was to spot signs of the condition as early as possible.
Folville Junior was recently awarded a dyslexia-friendly kitemark from the city council learning services’ Removing Barriers team.
School staff have received training on how to help children with dyslexia.
Teacher Theresa Drew, who helped organise the drop-in session, said: “It was very well supported and it was great to bring different people together to help raise awareness.
“We had a literacy specialist on hand to answer questions and I think everyone found it really useful.
“We know how important it is that children with dyslexia get the help they need as early as possible.”

Cosmetology students dream of making the world a little more beautiful. Beauty Schools Marketing Group, the company behind the beauty school directory websites BeautySchoolsDirectory.com and BeautySchool.com, wants to make that dream come true for four dedicated cosmetology students each year.
“We’re excited to announce that we are now taking applications for a $2,500 scholarship,” said Bridget Duffy, Director of Beauty Schools Marketing Group. “There are so many students who dream about entering the cosmetology field, but are worried about how to pay for the cost of beauty school. We want to help make these dream careers in cosmetology a reality.”
