Two Colorado middle schools offer college-level remedial math class

Twelve school districts in Colorado are sharing a seven-year, $35 million federal grant aimed at increasing college attendance.

Hiring counselors, staging college fairs and offering scholarships are all part of the deal. But two schools in Commerce City are taking it further in an effort to curb rising numbers of students who arrive at college and then are forced to take remedial courses before they can even begin their degree work.

The idea is simple: Give eighth-graders the chance now to take the math class they would have to take in college if they score poorly on their placement tests.

If they take it now and pass, it goes on their transcript.

“It’s amazing to see that I can take a college class,” said 14-year-old Abigail Soberano, a student at Kearney Middle School.

Hundreds back road safety call

Hundreds of parents have signed a petition demanding road safety measures outside a school.

The campaign was started by Carrie Adams after she witnessed a “horrifying” accident outside Linden Primary, in Evington, Leicester.

Seven-year-old pupil Charan Singh broke a leg when he was dragged under the wheels of a bus while walking to school last month.

Some 600 people have now signed the petition, which calls for a reduced speed limit and traffic-calming measures such as zigzag lines outside the school, in Headland Road.

It is due to be handed over to Leicester East MP Keith Vaz next week.

Mrs Adams, 39, who lives opposite the school, said: “I witnessed the accident and it has had a lasting affect on me.

“It was horrifying to see a young boy dragged underneath a double-decker.

“I have two teenagers myself and the thought of it being them is awful.”

Following surgery, Charan is now recovering at home.

Mrs Adams said the campaign was backed by the youngster’s family, as well as by beat officer Pc Rob Evans.

She said: “We simply want to prevent the chances of any more accidents or a fatality.

Mrs Adams said many people who had signed the petition were parents of children calling for action at other schools.

Mr Vaz said: “I’m happy to support demands for additional traffic-calming measures.

Budget Cut for National Center on Special Education Research May Stick

It appears that a large budget cut to the National Center for Special Education Research made earlier this year won’t be restored this week while Congress stitches together a 2012 budget.

The budget for the agency, which was about $71 million before Congressional action in April, was slashed by about $20 million, a blow to researchers working on special education issues.

In some cases, special education research goes to work for all students, said Lindsay Jones, of the Center for Exceptional Children. Response to intervention is one example.

“We view the funding from that center as an engine for innovation,” she said. “Local school districts will approach local universities with questions or concerns and real world problems will turn into research projects.
